Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park

April 11, 2009

The predicted thunderstorms held off on Friday and it turned out to be a great day. I visited two sites, but this first post will be about Hillandale Park in Harrisonburg.

Hillandale Park is a city park but it has a great network of trails in the back called Rocktown Trails. You can read a past article I wrote about them here.

Earlier in this project I had visited the trails a few times and it had seemed like it took forever to complete the circuit. It’s amazing what a few extensive hikes in Shenandoah National Park will do to change your mindset. Friday’s outing was literally a walk in the woods.

One of the first things to catch my eye was a single scruffy cardinal just singing away.

I made a few images but I’m pretty sure I’m set in the cardinal department. I also made a little video of the cardinal singing that’s kind of interesting. I’ll sit on that until a lull in activity next week and then I’ll post it for you all.

On the backside of the trail system I also spied a deer standing in the distance. Along the trail it is common to see deer tracks, but I don’t recall actually seeing any before.

I was hoping for a little bit more action (raccoons, opossums, chipmunks, etc) but maybe next time. It was still a good trip.

Yep, I live across the golf course from there and we have a bunch of robins, cardinals, finches, grackles, mourning doves, and other birds that come out every day.

    Also a skunk!

I haven’t seen any raccoons over here yet, which is surprising since people in this neighborhood are pretty bad at protecting their trash cans from animals!

And I’ve seen squirrels, but no chipmunks. I’ve seen chipmunks up in the Massanutten area, but not in Harrisonburg – have you seen some here before?

Interesting that the cardinal looks like it’s molting or something!

Seeing the skunk would be interesting. I’ve photographed one before with success (albeit nearly getting sprayed).

I see hundreds of chipmunks in SNP but never any within the city. A guy can hope though.
